Welcome to BC Explorer

Introduction

Welcome Visitors

We have decided to create this site to allow individuals to share information about some of the historic and interesting sites in the Pacific Northwest.

We hope to see this site evolve into a repository of information on the many odd and interesting places that grace the landscape of the Pacific Northwest

As a self described UE, and Research Hobbyist, this site allows me to share with the world all that I have learned about the fascinating places that surround my humble abode.

I derive no income from this endeavor, it is strictly an expensive hobby. Share the knowledge of the world, and you give a gift no one can deny.

This website is both a Hobby and a work in progress, let us know if we need to get our butts in gear and fill in some content!

Thanks for visiting, Checkout the site, send us an email through the Contact Form and let us know your thoughts

Gamestown 2010 Submission

Posted by: doubleds on 12/30/2009 07:03 PM
The Essondale Property will be 98 years old in 2010, did you know Coquitlam was chosen as the site of Canada's first botanical garden and arboretum in 1912?

Essondale is on Coquitlam's Heritage Register and also Canada's Register of Historic Places. The site consists of a variety of unique poured Concrete and Steel Institutional buildings built by the federal government in the early 1900's

The site is also unique in that 90% of it is heated using a central heating plant (which has recently seen a revival in the building industry for LEED certification) (EX. LEC Plants in North Vancouver, Dockside Green in Victoria) At one time the entire facility was self sufficient, getting food from Colony Farm and both Steam and Power from the immense Steam Power Plant.

The site has its own Bakery, Laundry, Fire Department, Construction Shops, Post Office, Church, Dining Hall, Gym, in essence, Essondale is a City within a City.

Many community leaders are pushing for the site to become a Recognized Historic Site, so that the lands and buildings can be stabilized, maintained and retained for future generations and that innovative new uses can be found for the buildings and lands that respects their historic and cultural influence. The entire site backs onto a large residential community and the hope is that one day the lands and buildings will once again become an integral part of the community of Coquitlam.

Yet Another Fire at Woodlands

Posted by: doubleds on 07/08/2008 12:50 AM (Read: 762)
I received no less then 5 calls this afternoon notifying me of yet another fire at Woodlands.

One cannot begin to fathom how this could occur a second time in a little less then one week!

Some have alluded to the possibility that it could have something to do with the upcoming meeting of ONNI and the City of New Westminster.

I am hesitant to connect the dots or create some sort of conspiracy, though it does seem eerily similar to a situation that occurred not that long ago in Ontario to Alma College.

Save Lonsdale School

Posted by: doubleds on 07/05/2008 11:45 AM
I met some wonderful people at my first visit to the North Vancouver Museum and Archives some months ago as I was searching out the history of the Lynn Creek Zinc Mines.

They informed me that the North Vancouver School District intends on demolishing the Lonsdale School, a local educational landmark of their community for just under 100 years.

I decided to volunteer my time to photograph and research the school for both the benefit of the local history organizations, and my own interest in institutional structures.
